City of Hope is leading the fight against cancers unique to women through research, treatment and education. Every year, too many women we love must battle breast and gynecologic cancers: our mothers, our wives, our sisters and our friends. Committing to Walk for Hope will support City of Hope’s efforts to push the boundaries of science to advance research and treatments on behalf of women everywhere.

Inspired by this vision, in November 2, 2014, BH Properties committed to Walk for Hope. The entire BH Team, together with over 10,000 members of the community, joined Women’s Cancers, Women’s Cures, Hope event held in Duarte, California. Through walking, we not only raised funds for the fight, but we also promoted regular exercise, which could cut cancer risk and help women lead longer, healthier lives.

In May 2015, BH Properties sponsored a local “college tour” for 43 middle school students from Alliance College-Ready Public Schools. Alliance’s goal is to graduate all students from high school ready for success in college and future careers. They offer college counseling services to increase student awareness of college, help them prepare academically and socially, and support students of finding the right college and scholarships that best match their academic, social and financial capabilities.A majority of their students come from families with very low incomes and low academic achievement. They basically have very little exposure to college-going culture.

We first visited Santa Barbara Community College (SBCC) where the students learned what they could do in High School to be able to continue to the Community College. After this tour, we visited University Santa Barbara (UCSB) where the students were able to talk to actual students and enjoy the whole “college atmosphere”.

BH Properties encourages academic achievement and being able to help “our future” envision the college experience and what it can mean for their future. Seeing them dream bigger and imagine more for themselves is what we strive. We plan to increase our trips by sending 26 schools, over 1400 students to these “college tours” during the 2015-2016 school year.

In March, approximately 40, 10th grade students visited University of California (UCLA). We had the opportunity to attend the Atmospheric Science Tour which gave the students hands on with actual weather instruments. The students were able to talk to actual students and enjoy the whole “college atmosphere”.

8th Grade students were chosen to visit University of California, San Diego (UCSD) where the students learned what they could do in High School to be able to continue to the Community Colleges and/or Universities. The tour of this huge campus helped encourage and answer many of the students questions and concerns for their future.
